ECD Hackathon

#ECDHackSA

Join our tech lab and drive change for SA’s children

How can technology be used to improve the lives of South Africa’s young children? We’re calling on developers, tech creatives and hackers to develop fundable, data-driven solutions for the Early Childhood Development (ECD) sector. The most innovative ideas have the chance to get seed funding from the Innovation Edge.

The challenge

The first years of a child’s life are the most important when it comes to the development of the brain. Good nutrition, responsive care, exposure to language, early stimulation through play and feeling safe are all key ingredients for healthy brain development during this critical period. Most young children in low-income communities in SA do not have access to quality ECD experiences or services, with far reaching consequences for individuals and society.

Hacking new solutions

The ECD hackathon will pair tech experts with leading ECD organisations. Together, teams will share ideas, brainstorm, and generate relevant solutions.

A judging panel will assess the creativity and feasibility of solutions. The best ideas will get cash prizes on the day and have the chance to apply for seed funding (of up to R1 million) from the Innovation Edge fund.

Who should apply to join the hackathon?

Developers, designers, hackers, and general data enthusiasts.
